Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speaker. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency which hosts videos and commentary analyzing depictions of women's roles in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic, blogger and award-winning feminist for nearly a decade. Feminist Frequency explores how women are represented in popular culture. In her efforts to break down stereotypes of women that exist in pop culture, she also works with issues that relate to the harassing women targeted by the media and other classes of people on the internet. Sarkeesian, who has the degree of Master's in Political and Social Thought at York University, is a popular public speakers. She has delivered speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. At a young age she was intrigued with gender issues and feminist thinking. As a student, in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency website. This ambitious woman planned to create an online series that examined the gender roles in games but was the target of an online harassment campaign. It was not enough to stop her. In fact, it strengthened her commitment to being a feminist and a media critique. As a result of the many contributions she has made to feministism, she's recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the founder of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization focused on the portrayal of women within pop culture and the narratives that surround them.
